SMERU's New Director and Deputy Director

We are very pleased to officially announce our new director and deputy director, effective 1 August 2019.

 

Director—Ir. Widjajanti Isdijoso, M.Ec.St.

Widjajanti (Anti) has more than 25 years of experience working in Indonesia on various research topics and issues related to policies, particularly in the areas of social protection, decentralization, poverty and inequality, human development, economic development, children, youth, food security and nutrition, and gender. Before being appointed as director, Anti served as the deputy director for research and outreach at SMERU for two periods (2009–2019). Anti has a wide range of expertise, particularly in preparing proposals and coordinating research, providing technical direction of study implementation, and ensuring the quality and supervision of the operation of poverty reduction programs. Her work has been published in a number of peer-reviewed journals, including the IDS Bulletin and BMJ Journal. Her article on decentralization in Indonesia was published in a book by ISEAS.

Aside from her working experience at SMERU, Anti was also a guest lecturer for the Postgraduate Program of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Brawijaya, and has worked as a regional policy analyst and project implementation coordinator at the United Nations Support Facility for Indonesian Recovery (UNSFIR), food aid monitor specialist at the World Food Program (WFP), and a researcher at the Center for Policy and Implementation Studies (CPIS).

Anti holds a master's degree in economics and a postgraduate diploma in applied economics from the University of Queensland, Australia, and a bachelor’s degree in aquaculture from the Bogor Agriculture Institute.

 

Deputy Director for Research and Outreach—Athia Yumna, S.E., M.Sc.

Athia has more than 11 years of experience working in the development sector and conducting applied economic research in the areas of poverty, inequality, social protection, health economics, and development economics. Her work has been published in a number of peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Economic Development and Cultural Change, Health Policy and Planning, and Health Economics. Some of her articles were published in books by ISEAS, Palgrave Macmillan, Anthem Press, Asian Development Bank (ADB), and Edward Elgar.

Before becoming the deputy director for research and outreach at SMERU, Athia was a senior researcher at the institute who led a number of research projects, including the Effectiveness of Social Protection (Overseas Development Institute), Health Equality and Financial Protection in Asia (Erasmus University Rotterdam and European Union), the Impact of Inequality in Indonesia (DFAT-Australian Embassy), Policy to Reduce Inequality (Ford Foundation), and Study on Inclusive Economic Development (Knowledge Sector Initiative and Ford Foundation).

Athia holds a master's degree in economics from the University of Warwick, England, and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Gadjah Mada University.
