RISE Programme in Indonesia (RISE) is an education research program led by The SMERU Research Institute, funded by United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) and Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). In this five-year research program, SMERU is partnering with the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD) and the Mathematica Policy Research (Mathematica) to identify issues of Indonesia’s education system and to encourage changes in components of the education system, which is a necessity for improving learning outcomes. RISE Programme in Indonesia specifically monitors the implementation of teacher reform in decentralized Indonesia and reviews how far the teacher reform can improve learning outcome.

RISE Programme in Indonesia is now recruiting suitably qualified staff holding Indonesian citizenship for the positions of:

1. Job Title: Qualitative Researcher – RISE Programme in Indonesia (Full Time)

Terms of Employment: 2-year fixed-term contract with a possible 1-year extension

Work Location: Jakarta

Reporting to: Qualitative Research Coordinator

Working under the direction of the project’s Qualitative Research Coordinator, the Qualitative Researcher shall perform various complex activities conducted by the qualitative research team.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  1. Collect primary and secondary data, and be involved in fieldwork;
  2. Conduct data entry;
  3. Organize and manage data owned by RISE Programme in Indonesia;
  4. Carry out data analysis;
  5. Participate in the writing of research publications, including policy briefs, journal articles, conference papers, and other types of publication based on the data analysis results and interpretation;
  6. Support the dissemination of research products;
  7. Attend and conduct seminars, workshops, meetings, and training courses; and
  8. Conduct other tasks as required.

Qualifications:

  1. A Master’s degree in political science or anthropology with a minimum of two-year relevant work experience, or Ph.D. degree with at least one-year relevant working experience;
  2. Strong interest in education policy research;
  3. Considerable knowledge of qualitative research methodologies;
  4. Familiarity in managing qualitative data, and ability to use qualitative data processing tools—such as NVivo—is preferable;
  5. Good ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  6. Advanced written and spoken communication skills in Indonesian and English;
  7. Proficient writing skills and ability to write academic reports and popular articles;
  8. Able to work independently as well as in a team; and
  9. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and interview skills.

2. Job Title:  Junior Qualitative Researcher – RISE Programme in Indonesia (Full Time)

  1. A Bachelor's degree in social sciences, humanities, or education, preferably with internship experience in research organization;

  3. Good knowledge of qualitative research methodologies;
  4. Familiarity in managing qualitative data, and ability to use qualitative data processing tools—such as NVivo—is preferable;
  5. Good ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;

3. Job Title:  Database Developer and Administrator – RISE Programme in Indonesia (Full Time)

Terms of Employment: 2-year fixed-term contract with a possible 1-year extension

Work Location: Jakarta

Reporting to: Programme Manager

The Database Administrator will play a major role in managing SMERU’s research data, particularly to ensure that the quality of SMERU (particularly the Indonesia RISE Programme) database system is clearly defined, consistent, complete, and backed up regularly. She/he will work under the supervision of Senior IT Officer and RISE Programme Manager. In the day-to-day activities, she/he will liaise with the RISE team as well as SMERU researchers.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  1. Together with SMERU’s IT team develop relevant, stable, effective, and reliable database structure;
  2. Modify database according to requests and perform tests;
  3. Gather user requirements and identify new features;
  4. Provide data management support to users;
  5. Managing files related to research, such as photo, recording, Nvivo documents, and Microsoft Office documents;
  6. Documenting data collected by SMERU researchers (particularly the RISE team) and other relevant study materials;
  7. Ensuring data attributes have been clearly defined and completed;
  8. Maintaining list of available data and preparing preview of data to support research team in identifying data;
  9. Retrieving/extracting data as requested by the research team;
  10. Providing advice/suggestion to maintain data consistency and to enrich the information;
  11. Supporting the use of online form for data collection and integrating it to the current database;
  12. Performing data backup on a regular basis; and
  13. Carry out other tasks as directed by SMERU director or deputy directors. This may include helping in the preparation of ad hoc events.

Qualifications:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in computer science;
  2. In-depth understanding of data management (e.g. permissions, recovery, security, and monitoring);
  3. Knowledge of software development and user interface web applications;
  4. Hands-on experience with SQL and MySQL;
  5. Familiarity working with .Net Framework, JavaScript, and HTML;
  6. Excellent analytical and organizational skills;
  7. Able to understand front-end users requirements and has a problem-solving attitude;
  8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; and
  9. Capable of working in a team.
